Prologue

In another age of the world, when the grass was greener and the land fairer, the dragons flew free above the bonds of the earth. With them they carried the eternal wisdom of all things and intimate knowledge of all the elements.

In this time, the Gods decided to put aside their differences to create Man, molded into an image of themselves. Thus was forged a race attuned to all and to none.
The dragons were witness to the coming of Man who were bound both to the earth and to short lives. They gave little notice to the new-birthed race until one came to stand apart. One called Rhodrin whose own kind called 'dragon-tamer' as he had gone forth and enlisted the aid of the most ancient of dragons to save Man.

Henceforth, the dragons came to have a new regard and interest in the race of Man. Some even took the shape and manner of the newest race to walk among them. So, it came to pass, that the blood of the eldest race mingled with the youngest.

That age of the world passed and with it the wings and wisdom of the dragons as they withdrew. In the minds of Men, the first race faded, first into memory, then legend and finally myth. But the blood of the elder ones lingered in the younger and in some it ran strong. In the depths of their minds, it whispered the old knowledge and wisdom. It allowed those forgotten children of two races to see things long past and forgotten. It taught them great skills - Skills to be used for good or evil.

Weekend Status Report

Not much to report from this weekend - The concept artist got briefed of the world and has started working, some texts got written and the design for the first area has been started.

The first area will introduce one of the NPC races, as well as some of the local wildlife - Some 3d models are under development for that race and the leader of it, even though the plan is to utilize a lot of the included models with RC at least for a start.
Hopefully we should be able to put up a bit of the lore and some graphics in a not to distant future.

Edit: Seems like my provider has zapped a few files from three-gods.com, so right now only the forums work. Not a big deal since there is no content there other than the forums right now anyways (and, I think they did it because I asked them to, so shouldn't keep happening). Will fix it when I get home from the office.

Game Play Mechanics

A short cut-out from the Design Document at it's current stage, dealing with the game play mechanics. Note that this is from the "summary" section, so there is much more to it, but it should give a general idea of where Three Gods is going.

Game Play Mechanics
Three Gods is a MMORPG, with the classical elements of such a game. The engine is based on a first person view and combat is more character skill based than player skill based. The rule-set of the game is completely class-less and entirely built around skills. Skills will be learned based on what the character chooses to focus on, and is constantly learned based on time elapsed (even when off-line). The choice of what skills a player can learn is based on what he already knows, and what he has acquired.
To support a dynamic economy, gear will rely heavily on crafting, and there will be a high chance of loosing ones gear; To counter player grief based on this, there will be mechanics to easily "get back in to the game" even after such a loss, and the skill system will be designed so that skills are a heavy influencer to be able to get gear.
Three Gods is primarily designed with Player-vs-Environment in mind.

three-gods.com is up!

With a very crude place holder home page, a forum that sorely needs an graphical overhaul and absolutely no content ;)

Hopefully that can be fixed in the not so distant future.

Hickups!

Well, predictably we're off to a slow start:

  • Registered a domain, but my web host is messing up so can't put anything on there yet (at least they are refunding me some ;)
  • My writer decided that the lore we intended to use was not what she wanted for the game, so the lore now needs to be heavily reworked.
But no worries, on the up-side, I managed to attract a concept artist to the project that will start working on some stuff - So hopefully not to long until there is a web-site to enjoy.

Welcome to Three Gods

MMO's and RPG's have long been a hobby of mine (for instance, check out thegrins.blogspot.com), and fiddling with creating one has been a on and off activity for ages. Being a developer, I had always started from the ground up, and thus never got anywhere ;)

Last summer I invested in Realm Crafter to actually get down to the business of creating the game instead of just writing code, but inspiration was low - But now a new attempt is made ;)

So far, the game has a working title - "Three Gods", hence the title of the blog, and it has a huge amount of the lore created (based on existing fiction by a unknown writer).

The Plan
  • Figure out where in the lore the game will fit
  • Summarize and write out a brief lore background
  • Create a web-site to publish the above (this might do for now, depending on how much time we get to spend on it)
  • Create a basic 'newbie' area in Realm Crafter to demonstrate a few of the designs that will set Three Gods apart
  • As soon as there is a very basic area to work with, players will be let in to test the world out (limited scheduled times for a start)

Knowing how often I tend to start projects like these and not finish them, no time line can be set at the moment, but the above plan isn't that much work - It's just a question of fitting it in with a busy professional life.
